Meet the Characters
Humphrey Smellington Smythe
Humphrey Smellington Smythe kindly agreed to narrate ‘The Todalie Stories’. (He is an extremely busy gentleman and it took many boxes of expensive chocolates, and promises of fame, to convince him that he was the right man for the job!)
Humphrey was born on the west coast of Ireland (although you wouldn’t think it to hear his accent!). He lived in a very small cottage but soon decided that he would be much better off living in a big mansion and so, packing his bags one day, off he went in search of the high life.
Of course Humphrey isn’t his real name! That is a mystery which he tells no-one; he simply thought he would do much better if he changed his name to a posh one, and he did just that!
Humphrey has never worked a day in his life, and doesn’t have to, as he is now very rich indeed. The only reason he agreed to narrate our books is that he likes to be associated with famous people and would really like to appear on the telly. We think that he thinks James is famous, as he has been on the telly and played with many famous people, including the Rolling Stones, and, of course, we have allowed Sir Humphrey to believe what he wants!
If you would like to ask Sir Humphrey anything, please feel free to do so on our Blog page, although we feel we must warn you that he is very long winded and can be a little boring at times!
Todalie was really surprised when we asked him if we could write a story about his adventures.
“Why would anyone want to write a story about me?” he asked. “I’m just a tatty old bear! Who could possibly be interested in me?And what about this?” he asked, bending over so we could see that some of the stuffing was missing from his head.
“What about it?” we answered. “We know that sometimes you may find it hard to do things on your own and that sometimes you even forget how to do things, but none of that really matters. What matters is that you are the kindest, bravest little fellow who has had lots of adventures and we want to let everyone know just how kind and brave you are.”
And so, Todalie decided that yes, he would like others to read about his adventures and no, he didn’t need expensive boxes of chocolates, or the promise of fame, like a certain person we all know!
We can’t tell you where Todalie was born as we simply don’t know, and Todalie simply doesn’t know either. All we know is that he lived in Jimmy’s house before the Sun found him one morning, lying half in and half out of the river, and that he now lives under a lovely old stone bridge at the bottom of our garden, where he is very happy indeed. He doesn’t need a great big mansion and lots of money, like a certain person we all know!
Todalie would love to chat to you on our Blog page. He may not give you the answers you want as he sometimes get a little bit mixed up but we are sure you won’t mind that, not one little bit.
Layliana is a beautiful young cygnet who was born in a nest of reeds on the shores of Lough Tattynoola.
She has three brothers, Shan, Robin and Yolo and none of them can wait until they learn how to fly. Layliana dreams of the day when she can soar up into the air and dance with the night light stars. Every night, before she goes to sleep, she watches them as they sparkle like diamonds in the sky, winking at her like all the colours of a rainbow.
Even though she is much younger than Todalie, they become very good friends after she helps to rescue him when he falls off a bridge into the lake. She is a very brave little cygnet and helps Todalie to be brave as well, even when he is very very scared and not sure that he wants to be brave at all at all!
Layliana is a very gentle and graceful creature, and although her feathers are brown because she is young, they will soon turn as white as white can be, and she will grow up to be a beautiful swan. Who knows, one day she may be very famous indeed, especially if lots and lots of people listen to her story!
Wasn’t Todalie very lucky the Paddleskaters were paddling around when he fell off the bridge and sank under the water? There they were, minding their own business when, plop, in he fell, right beside them.
Now, the Paddleskaters are funny little creatures. All they do, all day long, is flitter across the top of the water, having fun. We don’t know how they make any money, as none of them go to work, but they never seem to stop moving until it gets very dark and they have to go to bed, as they can’t see where they are flitting anymore.
If you ever wanted to see what they really look like, you would have to sit at the edge of a lake and wait for a little while until they appeared, but you would have to be wide awake and concentrate very hard, as they could flitter past you before you had time to see them!
We are very grateful that the Paddleskaters helped to save Todalie when he fell into the water, and we think it’s great that they spend their whole lives having fun and doing nothing else!
The Elder Wiblet
The Elder Wiblet is a very wise old man who has been around for an awfully long time. In fact, he has been around for so long, he can’t even remember when he was born!
He wasn’t always called the Elder Wiblet. His parents named him Willidius Wiblet but as he got older, and eventually became the oldest Wiblet in the land, everyone started to call him the Elder Wiblet.
The Wiblets live out in the middle of a bog, just past Raspberry Wood. They have a very big castle which is just as well as there are so many of them living there. All day long, they fix all sorts of things in their Fix-it Room, and creatures from all over the land come miles to see them as they are so good at fixing things.
As we said before, the Elder Wiblet is a very wise old man and he knows everything there is to know about anything. He is always inventing things and tests them out on the younger Wiblets, if they let him! If you ever see colourful windmills out on the bog, you can be sure that the Elder Wiblet put them there. Of course, he was the one who invented the Wiblet Wicycles. The reason the wicycles have such big chunky tyres is so they won’t sink when they are cycling across the bog.
The Elder Wiblet is a very clever man but he is also kind. We are very fond of him as he reminds us so much of our own dad, although they don’t look anything like each other at all, at all!
The Wind Devils
These are not the kind of creatures you would like to meet at all! They have thin black spines sticking out all over them and their teeth are as sharp as knives.
They live inside funnels, like mini tornadoes, and can’t wait for little creatures to be caught up by the wind so they can bite them all over.
Poor Layliana was absolutely terrified of them and we don’t blame her one little bit.
Its time someone taught those Wind Devils a lesson, don’t you think!
The Ringspinners are the strangest, floatiest creatures on the bog. They look like long ribbons, twirling and whirling around and around as they spin their fine silk threads all over the little Gorse bushes. (If anyone ever tells you that those are spider’s webs you see every morning on the bushes, don’t believe them! Its the work of the Ringspinners who have been up since dawn, spinning their threads and dressing the little bushes so they are ready for the day ahead!)
These lovely creatures have wide squishy faces and the longest eyelashes ever. They can see people coming from miles away, which makes it very difficult to spot them, if you happen to be out on the bog looking to find them.
Flossie Fruzzball is the most delicate creature we have ever met, and she was so excited when she heard she was going to be part of the Todalie Stories.
Do you know what a dandelion flower that has gone to seed looks like? Well, Flossie looks just like that! She is a round ball of fluff and if you were to blow on her, she would just fly away because she is so light and fluffy. She has a beautiful pair of round wings that help her to flutter and frizz all around the skies.
Flossie loves a little bit of excitement and is up for anything, but she is also a very sensitive little creature who gets very upset if she sees anyone being cruel or horrible to anyone else.
Flossie is a whole five years old! Look carefully and you just might see her floating past you one day.
